In other, lighter news:
> If you haven't seen it yet,
thatyourefuse is hosting an old-fashioned commentfic prompt meme. Come drop prompts and answer prompts and prove that these things still work so maybe more can happen, cause I don't know about anyone else, but I've missed these things and would like themed ones back.
> I may hop in on OC October belatedly. Not sure if I'd try to do one a day for the rest of October, one a day for 31 days, try to make up for the week I'm missing, or what, but it seems like it could be fun. ...If you happen to know any OCs of mine you'd like to see me talk about, feel free to throw names at me.
> So here's the thing: I'm not super versed in it but I love tabletop. And the game I had kind of fell apart for various time and energy and distance related reasons. But I've been missing tabletop and I've been missing it badly. Is there anyone who might be interested in starting a regular game on roll20.net?
Some specifics: I'm, as said, not the most experienced player, but I'm still happy to GM if you're willing to put up with me? (Fair warning, I tend more toward RP-choice-and-puzzle heavy RPG than combat-heavy when I plot things.) I'm also happy to hand the reins to someone else if somebody's dying to do it, though. I probably have two people willing to play already, even if I need to check with one of them, so I don't need more than a couple of people to make this a viable possibility.
System and genres: I'm familiar with AD&D 2nd Edition and I own AMP: Year One, which is a pretty simple RP system with some interesting plot hooks; but I'm more than willing to consider looking into other game systems, too, in various genres, whether anyone's familiar with them or not.
Timing and logistics: I lean towards text-only just because internet and computer software don't always love me, but would be willing to give voice and/or video a shot and see if my computer would let me. I work from home so day of the week/time is pretty flexible; I need to not be super loud when roommate is sleeping, if there's voice, but that's about it. I probably wouldn't start til November, because I've got editing projects to finish this month and then con + holiday at the end of the month, but if we get people together we can work on choosing a system and building characters before that so a plot can be got together.
So yeah, if you're interested, poke me, and maybe something can be worked out. I'm a little nervous putting it out there because I've literally only ever played with/GMed for my family and my oldest friends + partner, but I miss it a lot and I don't seem to be getting my old game back, so I'm kind of hoping I can get something going.
Edit to add: Okay, I definitely have [dear friend who is not on my DW] and me, and maybe/probably
thebonesofferalletters, but regular gaming may not get underway til very late November/early December for RL reasons. Planning and characters can definitely be met up for earlier than that, though.

Date: 2016-10-06 07:26 am (UTC)Are you still recruiting? Do you think I might be able to go adventuring with you folks? (If it ends up being all people who know each other in another context, it's fine to let me know I wouldn't mesh well as long as you're polite about it.)
What kind of setting would you be looking at? I'd be interested in AD&D, which I have played before, or in AMP, which I haven't.
Timing could be an issue but I think it's possible to work it out as long as we can have a set schedule. I am smooth with text or text-plus-stuff but I don't think I could do 100% video.
Yay gaming!

Date: 2016-10-06 10:35 pm (UTC)I figure once we get people together we can settle on a setting; I'm definitely pretty open if I'm GMing, and I'm assuming I probably will end up doing so. AD&D is a good base platform to run with if I just want to make up everything myself. XD And as said, AMP has some interesting hooks, but there's also plenty of other game systems I'm up for, so I'm happy to consider others. I think there's kind of a general bias towards more urban fantasy than high fantasy, but I've also done a classic D&D thing with both the players I've got so far and it was plenty fun, so.
Schedules are kind of weird - friend who wants to play does acting work and doesn't work steady, so what it might end up being is a regular time slot, with some flexibility in that sometimes sessions might have to be cancelled or pushed back a week because work is calling. That's another thing I figure we can work out when we know who's playing, basically. XD And I think I'm leaning towards either text or text-and-voice, for software reasons, so.
Very much yay. :D

Date: 2016-10-07 12:46 am (UTC)That sounds perfect actually.
In case it matters, I have an extremely exhausting work week MTWTF, roughly 7:00am to anything in between 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 or occasionally 6:00 pm, plus commute. (This is in Pacific time). I would try to do a weekday evening but not sure if it would work out. Saturday or Sunday are more-feasible for me, and I could do really anytime during the day, evening, or even at night on Saturday (sleep schedules what are they?). Probably the most-worst weekday evenings are Tuesday and Thursday; Friday might be the least bad. I recognize that my scheduling priorities are likely to crash into other people's, so I will *try* to do a less-ideal time slot and I'll be up front about whether it does or doesn't work. I have zero proble with sometimes rescheduling and postpoing and I should normally be able to drop a brief note if brainstuffs or workstuffs are either much-worse or much-better than usual.
>> And I think I'm leaning towards either text or text-and-voice, for software reasons, so. <<
Voice ... might or might not be a problem. Not sure. I've never tried, but my phone problems go up and down with my overall stress level. I would try though and it might work and that would be great! Text is definitely okay, if it is okay with other people.
>> Come to meeeeee, come on an adventure. <<
I am sooooo happppyyyy about this! You have immensely brightened my sad and soggy day here. I can hardly wait!

Date: 2016-10-07 01:06 am (UTC)I don't know if this will make things easier or worse, I just wanted to put that out there as a potential option.
(Sidenote: August and I are both amazingly awkward people sometimes, if you turn out to be the same, no one will judge. We will just all be ridiculous via whatever communication methods we go with.)

Date: 2016-10-07 01:17 am (UTC)As for scheduling: I mean, I think weekends would probably be fine. Bast and I do work from home stuff that can probably be shuffled around a time period - if things are so busy we can't make a pre-scheduled time on the weekend, they're probably so busy we'd have to cancel that week period. Beth's schedule is completely and utterly dependant on what jobs she gets, since it's extra work, so it really doesn't matter what time or day we put it for, there's always a small chance she'll have to cancel for the week. So I think we can definitely work towards something on the weekends.
I would like at least one more person, because I find it easier to balance the party - and therefore not require me to toss in NPCs to help make challenges doable, in the first few levels - if there's at least 4 people involved. So we'll see if anyone else speaks up and how things swing for them. But if nobody else wants to join in, I can probably work things out as is, so we'll see.

Date: 2016-10-08 04:45 am (UTC)What kind of voice chat application do you use? I have a MacBook Air and I have occasionally used Skype, or I think Google has a thing, but I would need to thrash out re-finding my log-ins.
Also NO GETTING HURRICANEDED before we game together. Please.

Date: 2016-10-08 05:15 am (UTC)No hurricaning, promise! It's already well up past us; we barely got rained on. I know it might loop around again, so we'll see how that goes, but it doesn't look like that's gonna hit us directly either, or be too strong even if it does head this way. We got lucky.

Date: 2016-10-14 06:39 pm (UTC)My email is darkofthestory@gmail.com - if you can email me with, at the very least, your DW (so I know who you are) and the name you don't mind being called in front of gamemates, I would appreciate it greatly.
I would also really appreciate the following information, so I can best figure out a game system/game ideas that will be enjoyable for everyone:
> Any preferences you have for days and times, and for how often to play (monthly, weekly, every other week, whatever).
> Any systems you've played before that you really don't want to play again (you can mention ones you liked too if you like, but I particularly don't want to stick anyone playing something they already hate)
> Genres you enjoy (examples: if you have a serious preference for urban fantasy over high fantasy, or you can't do anything even slightly horror-themed; also, if you have RPG experience and know you prefer, say, dungeon-crawling over puzzles, or vice versa, or can't stand political plots, let me know that.)
> Triggers, squicks, and things you'd prefer to avoid, preferably labelled by which is which
(On the last one, I promise I won't ask for explanations and I won't show anybody else, but it would help me a lot, especially to get a list of triggers. I will outright avoid all trigger for anyone playing, but I obviously need to know them first. And in general, squicks and general avoidances/things you rarely enjoy can help me design a more enjoyable plot.)
...This feels like a lot to ask, but the more I know about what everyone wants, the better a shot I have at finding a system and a plan that everyone will enjoy.
(Also if you still want to try voicechat I'm still up for it, sorry, we've just got super busy this week.)

Date: 2016-10-07 09:16 am (UTC)I'm much happier it being purely text. I hate my voice when it's recorded, and I'd spend most of my time wondering how much I sound like Minnie Mouse on helium.
no subject
Date: 2016-10-07 02:55 pm (UTC)It seems like text might be the best thing for everybody, the more comes out about it. My only problem with this has a lot less to do with gameplay than setup; sometimes it's easier for me to describe things via voice than via text, so if no one minds, there might be sections where I switch on voice, set the scene, and then switch to chat for the rest of the section. But we'll see; maybe I can prewrite enough description that I don't have to. (And I understand; I hate my voice any time I hear a recording of it myself.)
other than that, this week is kind of scattered, but I'll poke people for emails and try to gather things to figure out what we're going to play sometime this month, so planning and characters can start. :D

Date: 2016-10-07 02:57 pm (UTC)I don't mind listening. That's fine with me.

Date: 2016-10-07 11:17 pm (UTC)Some stuff on scheduling is in the top thread and I spent way longer than I should have today looking into systems. XD I'm taking a break from editing right now but once I get ducks in the row for the rest of this month, I'm gonna look into poking all five of you, laying out schedule notes and system options, and figuring out how this is going to work out.
